Middle-Earth: Shadow of War’s Endgame Missions Makes Players Play Defense

Thanks to EuroGamer, we received a sneak peek to what the endgame missions for Middle-Earth: Shadow of War will be like.

The new mission type is called Shadow Wars, and they become available after you complete the main story and conquered all of Mordor. Sauron’s army makes a comeback against you, attempting to re-capture all of the fortresses and strongholds you won during the course of the game. These assaults will be split into stages and will get increasingly more difficult.

This is a “shoe is on the other foot” situation where instead of mounting an assault yourself, your base is the one being assaulted. You must be able to successfully fend off waves of tough opponents to keep your base. These waves will not wait for you to complete the prior wave before charging in themselves. If your defenses are planned poorly, you can be standing in front of multiple waves of enemies and your base falling into rubble. If you win, you get to keep the base. If you lose however, your war chief is captured, your base AND region are stolen, the enemy war chief that did you in keeps a hefty difficulty bonus and a new title to proudly display.

Once all of the Shadow Wars missions are completed, then the game’s final ending will play. Eurogamer also reports the this ending will tie into the Lord of the Rings series.
