Today marks the release of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. What better way to celebrate the date than to list the Top Ten Street Fighter characters? Remember: this is my top ten filled with preferences, bias, and all that good stuff. Also, your list WILL differ. With that out of the way, let’s start the list!

Top Ten Street Fighter Characters

10. Dan –

I’m not going to lie, Dan’s not the strongest, but I must include him on this list. Designated Street Fighter’s loveable loser, Dan Hibiki’s dad had the strength to defeat Sagat in a fight. Perhaps he shouldn’t have taken Sagat’s eye, because Sagat retaliates by killing him. Dan runs to martial arts master, Gouken, but promptly gets turned away, because he wants to kill Sagat. Dan then creates a mix of what little Gouken taught him with Muay Thai. Creating his own “Strongest Style” earns him a spot on this list.

9. Guile –

Air Force soldier, Guile would do anything for his country. While at home, he prides himself as a family man. With Chun-Li, he searches for M Bison to exact his revenge for taking his commanding officer, Charlie Nash’s, life. Guile never could accept that he was gone for good. Despite Van Damme’s movie portrayal of him, or maybe because of it, Guile belongs on this list.

8. Zangief –

Pride of Russia, Zangief has scars all over his body from all the bears he wrestled in the name of Mother Russia. He tends to get under other fighters’ skins with his insults. He backs up his threats with his close-range wrestling style. Say what you will, but dancing with Gorbachev is cool.

7. Gouken –

Master to Ken and Ryu, Gouken learned from his master, Goutetsu how to kill, alongside his brother Akuma. Gouken would go on to alter the martial art to take the lethal potential out of the Hadoken and Shoryuken. Due to a typo in the English translation of Street Fighter II, myths of Gouken sprouted up. Gamers thought that Gouken was playable, even back then. Not until Street Fighter IV, could one play as the legendary teacher. April Fool’s legends aside, emptying his soul of hate to avoid death from his brother earns him a spot on this list.

6. Vega –

Fans often define this bloodthirsty Spanish noble by his claws and facemask. Vega wears the claws, because he loves to kill his prey up close and personal. He wears the mask, because of his vanity. He also believes that everything ugly should die. The mask protects what he considers perfection. The bullfighting ninja works under M Bison in the crime syndicate, Shadaloo. Play as Vega and “Let [his] beauty intoxicate you.”

5. M Bison –

The leader of the crime syndicate of Shadaloo, M Bison acts as the architect of most of Street Fighter’s characters’ misery. He killed Chun-Li’s father and Guile’s commanding officer. M Bison possesses an evil power known as “Psycho Power”. He always looks for a new body to possess. Though a scary individual, some choose to remember him as a humorous character portrayed by Raul Julia. Just remember your Bison Bucks!

4. Sagat –

For a long time, Sagat would be the only recurring antagonist from the original Street Fighter. People described Sagat as the Emperor of Muay Thai. He received the scar on his chest from his fight with Ryu in the first game. Sagat may have murdered Dan’s father, but something often goes unappreciated. He later threw in the fight with Dan to give the poor guy closure. Don’t ever say Sagat never did anything nice.

3. Chun-Li –

Chun-Li became a detective at age 18 to find her missing father. Sometimes known as the strongest woman in the world, Chun-Li worked for Interpol and therefore found herself chasing the man who killed her father: you guessed it, M Bison. Though yet another victim of a horrible video game movie adaptation, one had better hope they never get caught up in Chun-Li’s Spinning Bird Kick.

2. Akuma –

The brother of Ken and Ryu’s master, Gouken, Akuma follows the Satsui no Hado (Surge of Murderous Intent). Not evil for the sake of being evil, but instead because Akuma describes Satsui no Hado as Ryu’s fighting style’s intended use. Akuma possesses a hatred of those who use their power to flaunt their ego. In conclusion, if you challenge him, you’d better be willing to bet your life that you can win.

1. Ryu –

The most iconic face of the Street Fighter franchise, Ryu wanders from place to place trying to find the heart of battle. You might not want to hire him as your comedy partner, as he always has a serious demeanor. M Bison thought Ryu to have the perfect body for him to possess due to his immense power and fighting ability.  Though, canonically, his birthday is July 21, 1964. I wonder if M Bison still wants the body of a 53-year-old.
